33. باب الْأَمْرِ بِتَعَهُّدِ الْقُرْآنِ، وَكَرَاهَةِ قَوْلِ نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَذَا، وَجَوَازِ قَوْلِ أُنْسِيتُهَا
Chapter: The command to keep refreshing one’s knowledge of the Qur’an and that it is disliked to say I have forgotten such-and-such a verse, but it is permissible to say I have been caused to forget
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، " أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، سَمِعَ رَجُلًا يَقْرَأُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، فَقَالَ: يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ، لَقَدْ أَذْكَرَنِي كَذَا وَكَذَا آيَةً، كُنْتُ أَسْقَطْتُهَا مِنْ سُورَةِ كَذَا وَكَذَا ".
'A'isha reported that the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) heard a person reciting the Qur'an at night. Upon this he said: May Allah show mercy to him; he has reminded me of such and such a verse which I had missed in such and such a surah.
وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ ، وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، " يَسْتَمِعُ قِرَاءَةَ رَجُلٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَقَالَ: رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ لَقَدْ أَذْكَرَنِي آيَةً كُنْتُ أُنْسِيتُهَا ".
'A'isha reported that the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) listened to the recitation of the Qur'an by a man in the mosque. Thereupon he said: May Allah have mercy upon him; be reminded me of the verse which I had been made to forget.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ: قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ صَاحِبِ الْقُرْآنِ كَمَثَلِ الإِبِلِ الْمُعَقَّلَةِ، إِنْ عَاهَدَ عَلَيْهَا أَمْسَكَهَا، وَإِنْ أَطْلَقَهَا ذَهَبَتْ "،
'Abdullah bin 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The example of a man who has memorised the Qur'an is like that of a hobbled camel. If he remained vigilant, he would be able to retain it (with him), and if he loosened the hobbled camel it would escape.
حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالُوا: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَهُوَ الْقَطَّانُ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي كُلُّهُمْ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاق الْمُسَيَّبِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عِيَاضٍ جَمِيعًا، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ كُلُّ هَؤُلَاءِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، بِمَعْنَى حَدِيثِ مَالِكٍ، وَزَادَ فِي حَدِيثِ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ: وَإِذَا قَامَ صَاحِبُ الْقُرْآنِ فَقَرَأَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ ذَكَرَهُ، وَإِذَا لَمْ يَقُمْ بِهِ نَسِيَهُ.
This hadith has been narrated by Ibn 'Umar from the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) , but in the hadith transmitted by Musa bin 'Uqba, this addition is made:" When one who had committed the Qur'an to memory (or who is familiar with it) gets up (for night prayer) and recites it night and day, it remains fresh in his mind, but if he does not get up (for prayer and thus does not recite it) he forgets it."
وحَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وإسحاق بن إبراهيم ، قَالَ إِسْحَاق: أَخْبَرَنَا، وَقَالَ الآخَرَانِ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " بِئْسَمَا لِأَحَدِهِمْ يَقُولُ: نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَيْتَ وَكَيْتَ، بَلْ هُوَ نُسِّيَ، اسْتَذْكِرُوا الْقُرْآنَ، فَلَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَصِّيًا، مِنْ صُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ، مِنَ النَّعَمِ بِعُقُلِهَا ".
'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: What a wretched person is he amongst them who says: I have forgotten such and such a verse. (He should instead of using this expression say): I have been made to forget it. Try to remember the Qur'an for it is more apt to escape from men's minds than a hobbled camel.
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : تَعَاهَدُوا هَذِهِ الْمَصَاحِفَ، وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ: الْقُرْآنَ، فَلَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَصِّيًا مِنْ صُدُورِ الرِّجَالِ، مِنَ النَّعَمِ، مِنْ عُقُلِهِ، قَالَ: وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَا يَقُلْ أَحَدُكُمْ نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَيْتَ وَكَيْتَ، بَلْ هُوَ نُسِّيَ ".
'Abdullah is reported to have said: Keep refreshing your knowledge of the sacred books (or always renew your knowledge of these sacred books) and sometimes he would mention the Qur'an for it is more apt to escape from men's minds than animals which are hobbled, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: None of you should say: I forgot such and such a verse, but he has been made to forget.
وحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدَةُ بْنُ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ ، عَنْ شَقِيقِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَقُولُ: " بِئْسَمَا لِلرَّجُلِ، أَنْ يَقُولَ: نَسِيتُ سُورَةَ كَيْتَ وَكَيْتَ، أَوْ نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَيْتَ وَكَيْتَ، بَلْ هُوَ نُسِّيَ ".
Ibn Mas'ud reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Wretched is the man who says: I forgot such and such a sura, or I forget such and such a verse, but he has been made to forget.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَرَّادٍ الأَشْعَرِيُّ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " تَعَاهَدُوا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ، فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ، لَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَلُّتًا مِنَ الإِبِلِ فِي عُقُلِهَا "، وَلَفْظُ الْحَدِيثِ لِابْنِ بَرَّادٍ.
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: Keep refreshing your knowledge of the Qur'an, for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is the life of Mohammad that it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbled.
34. باب اسْتِحْبَابِ تَحْسِينِ الصَّوْتِ بِالْقُرْآنِ:
Chapter: It is recommended to make one’s voice beautiful when reciting Qur’an
حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " مَا أَذِنَ اللَّهُ لِشَيْءٍ، مَا أَذِنَ لِنَبِيٍّ يَتَغَنَّى بِالْقُرْآنِ ".
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported this directly from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) : God has not listened to anything as He listens to a Prophet (ﷺ) reciting the Qur'an in a sweet voice.
وحَدَّثَنِي حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرٌو كِلَاهُمَا، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ، قَالَ: كَمَا يَأْذَنُ لِنَبِيٍّ يَتَغَنَّى بِالْقُرْآنِ.
This hadith has been narrated by Ibn Shihab with the same chain of transmitters with words:" As He listens to a Prophet (ﷺ) reciting the Qur'an in a sweet voice."
